Who is a Good Candidate for Nitrous Oxide?

Nitrous oxide in Carrollton is great for patients who experience mild to moderate dental anxiety. It’s also an excellent option for patients who have:

  • A fear of needles.
  • Difficulty sitting comfortably in the treatment chair.
  • Dental sensitivity.
  • A strong gag reflex.
  • Anxiety or overstimulation.
  • Difficulty with local anesthesia.

While most patients who experience these are good candidates for nitrous oxide, we typically don’t recommend it to patients who are pregnant, have sinus congestion, have a respiratory disease, or who are taking certain medications that could interfere with the sedation.

What Can You Expect?

When you first arrive at our office, we’ll guide you back to one of our treatment areas and help you get comfortable in one of our chairs. Before we begin, we’ll place a small nose mask on you that will allow you to breathe in the colorless, odorless gas. Within a minute or two, you’ll begin to feel a wave of euphoria wash over you that helps you feel more at-ease. Our team will be able to quickly adjust the amount of sedation you’re breathing in throughout the treatment, if necessary, as well. Finally, once your treatment is complete, we’ll remove the mask and after a couple of minutes, the effects will wear off. That way, you can drive yourself home and continue on with your day as you normally would.

After Receiving Nitrous Oxide Sedation

Once your treatment is finished and the effects of the nitrous oxide have completely worn off, you’ll be able to drive yourself home, go back to work or school, or run any other errands you have to. However, you will need to stay in our waiting room for a few minutes before you leave. If necessary, we’ll schedule any follow-up appointments with you before you leave, too. Dr. Dandois, your sedation dentist in Carrollton, will also provide you with any treatment-specific post-op instructions for you to follow. If you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to reach out to our office directly!
